Roman fan gives fort 22,000 euros
July 28th, 2004
The donation will help pay for reconstruction work on parts of the ramparts to enable visitors to gain access to the imposing gateway.
A total of 160,000 euros will be spent on the Lunt this autumn to make improvements to the popular attraction.
Mr Rogers said: "The Lunt is a unique site and holds lots of potential both for tourism and education and I am keen to see it grow.
"I love Roman history and I've been a Roman reenactor for 22 years now. It's very worthwhile for me to donate this money."
Coventry policeman John Waite, who is spokesman for the Roman Military Research Society and an enthusiastic supporter of the Lunt, said: "It is marvellous that we will soon be able to enjoy the use of the gate tower and ramparts at the fort once more. It makes it that much nicer to know that one of our members has directly been able to make such a significant contribution to the future development of the fort."
Cllr Shabbir Ahmed (Con, Foleshill), cabinet member responsible for adult services, libraries, sport and leisure, welcomed the donation, adding: "The reconstruction work will allow many more people to enjoy learning about a unique time in Coventry's history."
